The capital region's economy takes advantage of the development, production and marketing of modern technologies. The location meets the high R&D requirements made by modern environmental technology, medical engineering and biotech firms and the rapid practical implementation of their findings. Indeed technology-oriented companies in Berlin have access to a unique research environment and well-functioning networks. The region has presently more than 194 biotech companies with more than 3,700 employees. Besides that, more than 250 different work teams connected to scientific institutions deal with biotech topics. The whole regional network contains more than 10,000 employees and is thus one of Germany's leading biotech-locations.
10 to 20 biotech-business creations per annum arise out of the region's universities and research institutions. The concentration of eight technology parks is unique in all of Germany.
